Upgrading a Nationwide, Fiber-Based, Electronic Packet-Switched Network

چکیده
We develop algorithms for the design of optical packet-switched networks. These algorithms are aimed at upgrading an existing ber-based, network infrastructure, such as the NSFNET backbone, by using Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology. The network architecture employs wavelength-routing optical switches which enable the establishment of all-optical, WDM channels, called lightpaths. A set of lightpaths may be used as a virtual topology over which packet-switched traac may be transported in a store-and-forward manner. The packet forwarding is done by electronic packet routers which are attached to the wavelength-routing optical switches. This paper examines issues related to the upgrading of an existing ber-based, packet-switched, electronic network to accommodate WDM, and to the optimal choice of the virtual topology based on changing traac demands. We demonstrate how the total information carrying capacity of the network can be enhanced by using WDM.

This paper describes how Merit Based Scheduling (MBS) can be used to increase the average throughput in an asynchronous bufferless Optical Packet Switched (OPS) network. Basically, MBS means that packets are forwarded based on its merit, which includes priority, number of resources taken, number of resources left etc. We show that using MBS increases the average throughput, but only in a limite...

Photonic packet switches offer the high speed, data rate and format transparency, and flexibility required by future computer communications and cell-based telecommunications networks. We review experimental progress in Multiwavelength photonic packet switches with an emphasis on all-optical guided wave systems. The term all-optical implies that the data portion of a packet remains in optical f...

The advances of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology and rapid growth of Internet traffic have generated a serious mismatch between huge transmission capacity of optical fibers and routing/forwarding capability of electronic routers, which has triggered many research activities on optical switching technologies. Among various switching technologies, optical burst switching (OBS)[1]...
